WALK-AND-TALK THERAPY
Therapy, with a little room to move.
Walk-and-talk therapy brings the conversation outdoors. Instead of sitting in front of a screen, we’ll walk together at a comfortable pace while we talk through whatever brings you to therapy.
What is walk-and-talk therapy?
Same therapy. A different setting.
Walk-and-talk therapy is individual therapy that takes place outdoors while we walk together at a pace comfortable for you. The focus of the session is still the same: you, what’s going on in your life, and whatever you want to work through.
You don’t need to be athletic or walk the entire time. We can slow down, stop, or sit when needed. There’s also no expectation to fill every moment with conversation. The goal isn’t exercise. Walking simply gives us another way to meet that may feel more comfortable than sitting in front of a screen.
Some people find it easier to talk while they’re moving. Others simply enjoy being outside or like having the option to step away from a screen.
Walk-and-talk therapy is currently available in the Farmington Valley and West Hartford area.
What to expect
Here’s what to know about walk-and-talk therapy, from the first session to the practical details.
FIRST SESSION
Your first session will take place virtually. This gives us a chance to get to know each other, talk about what brings you to therapy, and go over what to expect before meeting outdoors.
YOU SET THE PACE
There’s no required speed or distance. We’ll choose a route and walk at a pace comfortable for you, and we can slow down, stop, or sit whenever you’d like. If you have any mobility or accessibility needs, we can consider those when choosing a location.
LOCATION
Walk-and-talk sessions are available at select outdoor locations in the West Hartford and Farmington Valley areas, including Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Canton, and Granby. We’ll choose a meeting location together based on what works for you.
BEFORE WE MEET
Once we choose a location, I’ll send you the details you’ll need before your session, including where to meet, parking information, restroom availability, and anything else helpful to know about the location.
WEATHER
New England weather comes with the territory. Walk-and-talk sessions can continue through cooler weather when conditions are safe and comfortable. When the weather doesn’t cooperate, we can meet virtually instead.
WHAT TO WEAR
Come in whatever feels comfortable for walking and dress for the weather. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and layers can be helpful during cooler months. No special workout clothes required.
PRIVACY & CONFIDENTIALITY
Because sessions take place in public outdoor spaces, there is a possibility we may encounter other people along the way. We’ll talk beforehand about privacy, confidentiality, & what you’d like us to do if we run into someone you know.
FLEXIBILITY
You don’t have to choose between virtual and walk-and-talk therapy. We can use both throughout our work together, and if a walk-and-talk session doesn’t feel right on a particular day, we can talk about other options.
